AI Slop is Ruining Social Media
There are now dozens of powerful AI tools that will help you create images, videos and text in ways that were not possible, even just a few months ago. However, the incredible opportunity these tools offer inevitably means abuse too.
TikTok is now overrun with sloppy, AI generated videos from fake cooking shows to natural disasters and questionable social commentary. LinkedIn is also struggling with AI generated comments, as some people suddenly have the energy to write an essay in a comment, complete with a "Spot on!" at the beginning and plenty of "--" to give the game away. The barrage of social DMs and cold email is even worse.
I doubt this situation will last. The human craving for authenticity should mean social networks will see engagement drop and seek to label AI generated content, then ultimately filter it. Of course, AI generated content is not going away but I expect the most popular content on social media will revert to higher quality productions with humans and AI working together.
Social Media has been a net negative for most of its users but at least it was humans interacting with humans. While AI can be used to make humans better, the social media use case seems to be, once again, pushing society to be much worse.
